Energy-efficient home renovation has been a priority for public authorities for many years now. In 2020, this commitment will be taken a step further with the announcement of new grants. Older homes should be more comfortable and consume less energy, to the benefit of both the planet and your wallet.
Get a renovation bonus
Intended to gradually replace the CITE, MaPrimeRénov' is a flat-rate bonus distributed byAnah. Paid on completion of the work (carried out by an RGE-certified craftsman), in 2020 it will concern only low-income and very low-income households undertaking a certain type of renovation in their main residence (detached house or collective dwelling built at least 2 years ago). The allocation and amount of the bonus are based on resource ceilings established according to household composition and location. The amount awarded also varies according to the materials and equipment eligible, up to a ceiling of 20,000 euros for work on one dwelling, for a maximum duration of 5 years.

It's about to change : in 2021, all households will be eligible for Ma Prime Rénov', with no income requirements. Landlords and condominium associations will also be eligible.
The Citizens' Climate Convention
The Citizens' Climate Convention is a government initiative aimed at finding solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 . To achieve this, the public authorities intend to fight against "thermal passoires" (i.e. homes rated F and G in the DPE) and make energy performance a criterion of decency from 2023 onwards. Tenants would be entitled to ask their landlord to carry out the necessary work. If the landlord refused, the dispute would be referred to the courts, which could prohibit the tenancy.
Another significant measure is that, as of January 2022, the installation of oil- and coal-fired boilers would be prohibited for all new buildings. For boilers of this type already installed, in the event of breakdown, they would be replaced by less polluting installations, preferably using renewable energies. No more piecemeal work. Renovation will have to be considered in its entirety.
Of course, this comes at a cost. That's why renovation grants are to be doubled. In future, they could cover up to 80% of the cost for the most modest households.
Good to know: For the moment, these measures are still under study. We'll have to wait until autumn to find out more.
Get part of your renovation costs reimbursed
Since 2005, the aim of the Crédit d'Impôt pour la Transition Energétique (initially CIDD - Crédit d'Impôt pour le Développement Durable) has been to encourage individuals to carry out energy improvements to their homes. Thanks to this scheme, you can deduct a portion of certain renovation work from your taxes. It is due to disappear in 2021, to be replaced by Ma Prime Rénov'. In the meantime, in 2020, the CITE is still in force, but has undergone a number of changes:
- it is calculated on the basis of a fixed amount that varies according to the equipment, up to a ceiling set at 2,400 euros for a single person and 4,800 euros for a couple;
- only 8 types of expenditure are eligible: gas boilers, heating control devices, electricity supply systems using hydraulic or biomass energy, DPE realization , gas micro-cogeneration boilers, individual meters, natural ventilation equipment (DOM), inserts or closed fireplaces. In 2020, however, 7 new types of expenditure have been added, essentially installation costs (installation of glass wall insulation, equipment for connection to a heating or cooling network, etc.).seau de chaleur ou de froid...), but also the acquisition and installation of a double-flow mechanical ventilation system (VMC), or the carrying out of a "bouquet de travaux" (under certain conditions);
- the CITE is means-tested (except for the installation of an electric car charging station). It is only available to households whose income exceeds the Anah ceilings (otherwise MaPrimRéno' applies) and is less than 27,706 euros for the 1st part of the family quotient + 8,209 euros for the next 2 half-parts + 6,157 euros for additional half-parts.
1 help not 2: If you have declared work to obtain both the CITE and MaPrimeRénov', you will have to reimburse the tax advantage (if you have received it) and may also be fined 50% of the tax advantage and a minimum of 1,500 euros.
Apply for a renovation grant
Since 2019, the "Coup de pouce économies d'énergie" scheme has enabled households in a situation of energy insecurity to benefit from aid to carry out renovation work.
The scheme consists of 2 grants, the "Coup de pouce chauffage" grant and the "Coup de pouce isolation" grant.
The amount of the grants depends on the household's level of resources and the work carried out. They are paid by companies that have signed the "Coup de pouce économies d'énergie" charter, listed on the Ministry of Ecological Transition website.
The bonus is paid by bank transfer or cheque. It can also be deducted from the final bill or given in the form of "vouchers" for everyday consumer products.
In the "coup de pouce" series, the latest is called "coup de pouce thermostat with efficient regulation". This bonus of 150 euros per dwelling concerns homes equipped with an individual heating system (boiler, heat pump, electric radiator, etc.). It covers almost half the cost of installing a programmable thermostat to regulate heating. The installation must be carried out between June 25 and December 31, 2020 by an RGE (Reconnue garante de l'environnement) company that has signed the "coup de pouce thermostat avec régulation performante" charter.
Important: The "coup de pouce thermostat avec régulation performante" scheme cannot be combined with other "coup de pouce" schemes or energy-saving certificate bonuses.
Get an interest-free loan
For your renovation work, you can apply for an interest-free loan: theÉco-prêt à taux zéro (Eco-PTZ ). Contrary to what its name might suggest, there's more to it than meets the eye. Available until December 31, 2021, it can be used to finance :
- work corresponding to at least one of the following categories (roof insulation, thermal insulation of exterior walls, thermal insulation of exterior windows and doors, installation of heating equipment using a renewable energy source, etc.);
- work to improve the energy performance of your home, for which you have received a grant from theAgence nationale de l'habitat (Anah);
- work to retrofit your non-collective sanitation system with energy-saving devices;
- or work to achieve a minimum overall energy performance for your home, as determined by a thermal study carried out by a design office.
The loan of up to 30,000 euros is repayable over 15 years.
And why not 2 Éco-PTZ
Beneficiaries of an Eco-PTZ can apply for a second one within five years of the issue of the 1st Eco-PTZ offer, up to an overall limit of 30,000 euros per home.
Peace of mind for better housing... what a program!
Anah has strengthened its "Habiter mieux sérénité" program to provide even more effective financial support for homeowners with thermal renovation projects. To qualify, you need to be the owner-occupier of a home over 15 years old, and not exceed a level of resources revised each year on January 1. The work must deliver energy savings of at least 25% (wall insulation, boiler replacement, etc.). Financing is proportional to the cost of the work and your income:
- if your income is very modest, assistance is equal to 50% of the total cost of the work, excluding VAT, up to a maximum of 10,000 euros. If the work results in an energy saving of at least 25%, a bonus of up to 2,000 euros is also paid.
- if your income is modest, assistance is equal to 35% of the total cost of the work, excluding VAT, up to a maximum of 7,000 euros. If the work results in an energy saving of at least 25%, you are entitled to an additional bonus of up to 1,600 euros.
More assistance : If your home is very energy-intensive (energy label F or G before the work), you can benefit from a higher level of assistance if the work carried out results in an overall energy improvement of at least 25%.alize an overall energy improvement of at least 35% and a gain corresponding to at least a leap of two energy labels. In 2020, very low-income households will be eligible for a grant of up to 19,000 euros. For low-income households, the subsidy will be up to 12,500 euros.
